Donington British MotoGP
MotoGP now moved to Silverstone for 2010
In 1931, one of Britain's most popular
racing circuits, Donington Park, was opened. Amongst MotoGP and British
Superbike Championship, Donington park is also host to rounds of British
Formula 3 Championship and the Le Mans series.
Originally the track was made for motorcycle racing only.
However two years later, Fred Craner, a local garage owner, convinced
the owners of Donington Hall to allow car racing . For this to be made
possible the circuit had to be resurfaced and extended. The first Donington
Grand Prix was held two years later, in 1935.
Following the closure of Donington Park during the second
world war the circuit was rebuilt in 1977.
It wasn`t until 1987 that we had the pleasure of witnessing the first
Motorcycle Grand Prix held at Donnington and will be able to continue
to do so until 2009 when the Motogp contract is up for renewal.
Donington is made up of fast sweeping corners which interlink from one
to the next. Unlike other circuits in the MotoGP this suits a smooth riding
style, rather than out and out power and acceleration after heavy braking.
The Melbourne loop section just before the pit straight was introduced
in 1986, which is the only section that does require standing the bike
on it's nose and powering out.
