MotoGP - Jerez 2009
Rossi and Pedrosa battle for the win at Jerez

For the 3rd round of this year’s MotoGP the riders found themselves at the Jerez Circuit, Spain. Whilst Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa were planning on finishing first in front of their own countrymen, Valentino Rossi was readying himself for his first win of the season. In the 125cc race British youngster Bradley Smith found himself on the top step of the podium for the first time in his career.

Lorenzo started in Pole Position with Pedrosa in second, only a few tenths of a second slower in qualifying. Finishing off the 1st row is Stoner who secured a safe 3rd position. Thanks to a lot of hard work on the Ducati, a podium position looks promising. Despite good runs during the practice laps on Friday, Rossi found himself unable to re-create the same lap times on the Saturday for qualifying due to problems with the bike and the wind speed.

Heading off the second row were Randy De Puniet in 5th and Loris Capirossi in 6th. Sete Gibernau’s return to the MotoGP see’s his 3rd race back on the 4th row in 12th position. And British Ex. Superbike Rider James Toseland starts in 14th position on the 5th row, hoping to finish in the top 10 on Sunday.

The race started with Pedrosa, off to a good start moving from second to first and Lorenzo being forced back to 3rd as Stoner moves up another place. However Rossi and De Puniet remaining in the same position they started from. British Rider JT (James Toseland) fell back 2 places and is standing in 16th position, not a good start for the British no. 52.

Unlike many of the races we have seen before there is not much of a gap at the start, with one rider putting a good distant between themselves and their fellow riders. The race begins quite compact with riders battling it out; Andrea Dovizioso and Colin Edwards battling for 6th place, Rossi and Team-mate Lorenzo fight for 3rd, and the race leader Dani Pedrosa under pressure from both; Spain and Casey Stoner to stay in first position. 2 laps in De Puniet takes Edwards Position in 6th and soon after Rossi Sneaks down the inside of Jorge Lorenzo so he can set his eyes on the Leading Riders, who at this stage had already started to widen the gap between 2nd and 3rd.

Due to the tracks resurfacing last year it is expected that the riders will be able to be marginally faster than previous years. As the riders are about to complete another lap, Andrea Dovizioso attempts to overtake De Puniet, however as they both battle for the same piece of track there is a coming together of wheels, both riders stay vertical and despite a significant wobble continue onto the pit straight.

As the race progresses the gap between 1st and 2nd is widened whilst the gap between 2nd and 3rd is closing, and Spanish Rider Jorge Lorenzo despite having excellent runs through the weekend begins to fall further behind the leading 3 riders. By the end of the 5th lap, Rossi manages to squeeze past stoner, with Rossi fans still out of their seats celebrations are cut short as Stoner retakes 2nd Position on the 1st corner of lap no. 6. They duel for the whole 6th lap culminating in Rossi grabbing the overtake on the last corner of lap 6 denying Stoner a chance to recover.

At the back of the field however the fight for 13 is not over as Mika Kallio attempts to hold off James Toseland. Unfortunately for the former world champion Nicky Haden is finding himself 2nd from last in 17th position at lap 13.

Despite Pedrosa’s best efforts, the gap at the front between him and Rossi was beginning to narrow, the battle for 1st was not yet over. By the half way point Lorenzo was closing the gap on Stoner, the battle for 3rd was cut short with Lorenzo low siding off the track in a shower of sparks and gravel.

With only 10 laps to spare Rossi completes his goal to catch and pass Dani Pedrosa. For the remainder of the race he continues to pull away from 2nd place Pebrosa eventually to finish over 2.5 seconds in front to take a very convincing win and take the top step of the podium.
